The Lap Record Shattered!
In a stunning display of speed, Marco Bezzecchi, riding for Aprilia Racing, has absolutely dominated the first day of the Liqui Moly Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. His incredible lap time of 1:26.492 not only secured him the top spot but also set a new lap record, leaving his competitors in awe.
But here's where it gets interesting... it was a team effort for Aprilia, as Raul Fernandez, from the Trackhouse MotoGP Team, joined Bezzecchi at the top, creating an impressive 1-2 finish for the Italian manufacturer. Fabio Di Giannantonio, of the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, completed the top three, while Fermin Aldeguer, the recent winner, narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for Q2.
Practice: A Tale of Two Sessions
MotoGP Practice began with a familiar sight - Francesco Bagnaia, of the Ducati Lenovo Team, returning to the pits, shaking his head. Technical issues plagued his number one bike, leading to a switch to the second Ducati. Pecco, as he's known, quickly found his rhythm, moving up to P5 with time ticking away.
Bezzecchi led the pack initially, followed closely by Pedro Acosta. However, Di Giannantonio took over with 37 minutes remaining, setting a fast 1:27.483. Acosta's session was briefly interrupted by a small crash at Turn 4, but he quickly returned to the track, just as the action heated up.
Home favorite Jack Miller made a significant move, pushing his Prima Pramac Yamaha to P2, hot on the heels of Di Giannantonio. Miller then took the top spot with 14 minutes left, only for Bezzecchi to respond with a blistering 1:27.099. But the Italian wasn't done yet; he delivered an astonishing 1:26.580, breaking the lap record. 'Take that!'
El Diablo, Fabio Quartararo, joined the Monster Energy Yamaha duo, finishing behind Bezzecchi. His teammate, Alex Rins, was fourth, with Fernandez in fifth. These moves pushed Bagnaia outside the top 10, while Alex Marquez, a rival for P2, climbed to P3, splitting the factory Yamahas.
With time running out, Pecco was still outside the top 10. But he was on a charge, setting a personal best of 1:27.132, good enough for P7. Pol Espargaro, Maverick Viñales' stand-in, snatched P8 and automatic Q2 qualification.
And then, Bezzecchi struck again. Another all-time lap record? Absolutely! He clocked a stunning 1:26.492, extending his lead by over four tenths. Fernandez followed suit, securing an Aprilia 1-2, just three tenths behind the pacesetter.
All eyes turned to Aldeguer, the Indonesian GP winner. Could he snatch P10 from Acosta? He came agonizingly close, just 0.005s off, but it wasn't meant to be. The rookie will have to battle through Q1.
The Top 10: A Preview for Saturday
As we head into Saturday, the question on everyone's lips is: Can anyone catch Bezzecchi in qualifying? Aprilia has had a dream day at Phillip Island, with Fernandez comfortably in P2 and Di Giannantonio in P3. The Italian is the fastest Ducati on the track, while Quartararo leads the Yamaha charge in P4.
Alex Marquez completes the top five, joined by Rins, Luca Marini, and the impressive Espargaro in the top eight. Bagnaia slipped to P9, but he's safely through to Q2, with Acosta just holding on to P10.
